Our Proud History
The Community Medical Center Auxiliary Association was founded in 1954 when 200 women attended a Tea at the Toms River Town Hall to discuss the need for a hospital in central Ocean County. So enthusiastic were these women, that in just four short months nineteen local groups, called Auxiliary Twigs, were formed and functioning.

Their dedicated purpose was to raise funds to provide modern hospital facilities to meet the health care needs of the rapidly growing and changing area. By 1961, the Auxiliary's efforts were realized when Community Memorial Hospital opened its doors to the very first patient.

Join Our Auxiliary

We’d love to have you. Quality health care is everyone's business, and assistance and support is needed from every healthcare consumer. You can make a difference!

Auxiliary membership is open to every interested adult, man or woman, living in the hospital's service area.

You may join the Auxiliary by becoming a member of an existing Twig, or you and a group of six or more friends may form your own. You can also volunteer at either the hospital Gift Shop or the Second Time Around Consignment Shop and enjoy the rewards of being an Auxilian. If you are interested in Auxiliary membership, but cannot actively participate in a Twig at this time, you may join as an Associate Member. Associate dues are $5.00, and entitle you to full participation in all Auxiliary activities and mailings.

Currently Twigs are active in Holiday City Berkeley in Toms River as well as in several Toms River and Island Heights areas.

  • Founding Members’ Auxiliary Statement of Purpose
    We sincerely believe it is more than a mere building we are erecting. It is a hospital for the care of those who cannot take care of themselves; It is a community project, wherein everyone has an opportunity to help in making ours a better neighborhood in which to live and enjoy living; And finally, it is an eternal monument to the joy of accomplishment that comes through neighborliness and cooperation.

    Today, the essence of this statement still rings true for our Auxilians. More than bricks and mortar, our Medical Center is a provider of life and care to those who turn to Community Medical Center for help.

Mission Statement
The Auxiliary actively supports Community Medical Center's commitment to build lifetime relationships and improve the health status of their community.

To achieve this, its members will serve as ambassadors to promote community service, education, quality care, and wellness. Through teamwork, the Auxiliary will raise funds to support the mission of Community Medical Center.

Through the years, Auxiliary contributions to the hospital have reached over $10 Million. Items such as Infant Hearing Screening equipment, a Mammography Over-reading machine, a DEXA bone density machine, and numerous MICU vehicles have been purchased with Auxiliary funds. Renovations of the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center and the Emergency Department, as well as other hospital areas have also benefited from Auxiliary support. In 2003, an initiative entitled the “Wish List Program” has enabled various patient care areas to add much needed equipment – items that might have not been purchased without the Auxiliary’s efforts, given these budget restricted times.

Our Auxilians are also the Medical Center's ambassadors in the Community. They are literally our eyes and ears, bringing attention to topics and concerns which need to be addressed by health care providers. Today's Auxiliary membership of approximately 250 remains committed to promoting Community Medical Center's mission through advocacy, education, fundraising, and service.

Each Auxiliary Twig is self-governing, holds its own meetings, and selects activities that interest them most. Some examples of activities are an annual Crafts Boutiques, Home/Kitchen Tour, Strawberry Festival, Luncheon and Fashion Show, Food Tasting, Riverboat Cruise, and vendor and holiday plant sales.

Other Auxiliary-wide projects include the operation of the hospital's Gift Shop and Community's own Second Time Around Consignment and Thrift Shop -- located just off Route 37 West at 200 Corporate Circle in Toms River’s Corporate Park North. The Auxiliary also sponsors the hospital’s Coffee Shop and a Baby Photo service for new parents.

Each May, our Auxiliary’s efforts are recognized at the Annual Auxiliary Tea -- open to every member, and sponsored by the Community Medical Center Foundation – a tradition which honors its proud beginnings.
