Every year, more than 1.6 million older U.S. adults go to emergency departments
for fall-related injuries. The Center for Healthy Aging will present A
Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls. This free, eight-part
series is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity
levels of older adults who have this concern.
This evidence-based series will help participants learn to:
- view falls and fear of falling as controllable
- set realistic goals for increasing activity
- change their environment to reduce fall risk factors
- promote exercise to increase strength and balance
The program is designed to benefit mobile adults, age 60 or older, who
are concerned about falls, may have sustained a fall in the past, limit
their activities because of concerns about falling and are interested
in improving flexibility, balance and strength.
A Matter of Balance uses a variety of activities such as group discussion,
problem-solving, skill building, assertiveness training, videotapes, sharing
practical solutions and exercise training to help seniors prevent falls.
