About Our Emergency Department

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Jersey City Medical Center, sees over 67,000 visits each year.

Jersey City Medical Center's Emergency Departments are known for high-quality provider care, unparalleled nursing care (Jersey City Medical Center ED nurses just received the prestigious Magnet Recognition-the highest recognition of nursing excellence) and for being both Geriatric and Pediatric-friendly.

The Jersey City Hospital Campus features a specialized Pediatric Emergency Department, which is staffed by highly-trained pediatric emergency physicians and specialized pediatric ED nurses.

As the regional Level II Trauma Center, Jersey City Medical Center is known for providing state-of-the-art care to the communities it serves both in New Jersey and in New York.

For less emergent ailments such as sore throats, sprains and scrapes we provide a “Fast Track” section of the Emergency Department from 10 AM to 10 PM in order to expedite your care.

Jersey City Medical Center is the first hospital in Hudson County to provide a 24/7 cardiac cath lab. This means that we are equipped to treat patients who need emergency angioplasty for heart attacks 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If coming by ambulance, your care often begins even before you arrive at the hospital. We have direct communications with the paramedics and are able to receive EKGs as well as initiate your care and activate the cardiac cath team to prepare for your arrival. This means improved care and improved outcomes in a setting where minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

The Emergency Department is staffed by board certified/board eligible emergency physicians, who are all members of Emergency Medical Associates (EMA), one of the country’s premier emergency physician groups (www.ema-ed.com), which is well recognized for having leaders in all facets of emergency medicine, both on a regional and national basis.

As a teaching affiliate and a member of Americas Essential Hospitals we are dedicated to the education and training of future generations of physicians. Residents from the Departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Ob/Gyn of Jersey City Medical Center all rotate through our department as well as medical students from different medical schools. We also serve as one of the clinical sites for Mount Sinai’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The affiliation also provides access to the latest medical developments as well as leading physicians in different medical specialties.

A state-of-the-art electronic medical record (EMR), called Emergency Department Information Manager (EDIM) is currently in use at the Jersey City Hospital Campus.

Less than 20% of today’s emergency departments use an electronic medical record (EMR). EDIM incorporates evidence-based medicine clinical “best practice” guidelines to ensure the highest quality of clinical care.

For patients with ongoing health conditions, EDIM allows the ED staff to immediately access previous ED visits to quickly view previous treatments, test results and prescribed medications. Upon being discharged from the ED, all patients are provided with clear, legible discharge instructions, which includes prescription information.
