Make a difference...

JCMC volunteer

Becoming a volunteer at Jersey City Medical Center is a way for you to give something back to the community, develop new skills, make new friends, explore a career in health care, and/ or gain hands-on work experience.

Our volunteers range from teenagers to retirees, and many in between. These are both people who love keeping busy and those who are already busy, but somehow find the time to help others.

As a volunteer, you will play an integral part in the life of our hospital, complementing the work of our professional staff and physicians and making a difference in the hospital experience of our patients.

Opportunities

There are many opportunities for volunteers at Jersey City Medical Center. Here are just a few examples of what our volunteers do:

  • Provide companionship and support to patients of all ages hospitalized on nursing floors, in the ER, or in other patient areas, so as to make their hospital stay as positive as possible
  • Act as an advocate and liaison for patients and their families
  • Dispense information to patients, their families and guests either in person or on the telephone
  • Act as a messenger or patient escort
  • Circulate books, magazines, newspapers, and games
  • Perform clerical duties

Unique opportunities:

  • Musicians to visit patient areas (audition required)
  • Lobby piano players (audition required)
  • Eucharistic ministers
  • JCMC Auxiliary: meets monthly to organize fundraisers and projects benefitting the hospital.
  • Magazine collection: Donate used magazines in good condition for our bookcart. Students will receive 10 volunteer service hours in exchange for 100 magazines.

The Department of Volunteer Services will work to assign you to an area that meets your interests. You can serve during the day, in the evening and/or on the weekend.
