About the General Practice Residency Program
The overall goal of the GPR Program is to provide residents with advanced training beyond predoctoral education to enhance individual skills and confidence in practicing general dentistry with a multi-disciplinary approach.
The Program was established over fifty years ago and has trained hundreds of graduates some of them have become program directors throughout the state.
We are also affiliated with the Montefiore Medical Center.

Application Process (Requirements and Selection)
- Applicants must be graduates of an ADA accredited school.
- Applicants must be eligible for a New Jersey State Limited Permit to Practice Dentistry.
- Interested applicants may apply through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) with all the necessary documentation.
- Applicants will be evaluated based on their past academic record and demonstrated interest in dentistry.
- Each qualified applicant will be invited to a personal interview to further understand his/her interest and determine if the program and applicant are a good match.
- The Jersey City Medical Center General Practice Residency Program does not participate in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program.
- Accepted candidates are usually notified within 2 weeks after interview (before the MATCH deadline).
Certificate
Upon successful completion, graduate will be issued an official certificate that may be used for licensure to practice dentistry and oral conscious sedation.
Accreditation
The General Practice Residency is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted its highest accreditation (with status of "approval without reporting requirements"). The Program complies with the ADA GPR standards.
Curriculum
- Two-hour lecture sessions are held weekly in a structured classroom environment. Topics include various disciplines of dentistry including in-services, guest lecturers/clinicians, hands-on sessions, off-site seminars, lectures from sub-specialists, and visits to private practices.
- Residents provide comprehensive care on patients at our well-equipped facility.
- Residents receive clinical experiences in all phases of dentistry in accordance with the ADA standards.
- Valuable oral surgery experience is enhanced by on-site OMS attending staff and oral surgery residents.
- Rotations include: (a) General Anesthesia, (b) Physical Diagnosis, (c) Emergency Medicine, and (d) Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery.
- Rotations will be held at Jersey Medical Center Hospital and Christopher Columbus Health Center and are instructed by board certified specialist of the respective disciplines.
- Each resident shares ‘on-call’ responsibilities for after-hour hospital emergencies.
- Residents gain valuable experience at a level-two trauma center in patient assessment diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of emergency problems and injuries to the dental and maxillofacial structures.
Salary and Benefits
Residents receive highly competitive annual salary semi-annual raises. Benefits include medical and dental insurances, meal stipends, uniform allowances, and travel expenses. Residents receive 4 weeks vacation per year and paid holidays.

Jersey City Medical Center is situated along the Hudson River overlooking the New York Harbor and Liberty State Park in a state-of-the art facility and is in close proximity to the downtown and waterfront districts in Jersey City, and the PATH train via the Light-Rail line. Various restaurants, grocery and department stores and Newport Centre is within a short distance from the Medical Center.
