PGY2 Goals & Objectives

The goals and objectives of student/resident training for the second year of training must be at a higher level than those of the first year of the program. It is the intention that the resident build upon their PGY-1 experience to provide care in more complex cases

Surgery

  1. To manage the surgical component of dental implant systems
  2. To independently perform surgical and non-surgical extraction of teeth
  3. To independently perform initial treatment and management of extra-oral and intra-oral hard and soft tissue lesions of traumatic origin.
  4. To independently perform initial treatment and management of extra-oral and intra-oral hard and soft tissue lesions of a suspicious nature.
  5. To independently perform biopsies of oral tissues and follow up with the patient when the results are confirmed.
  6. To independently treat patients with post operative complications related to intra-oral surgical procedures
  7. To independently perform uncomplicated pre-prosthetic surgery
  8. To gain the ability to assess and manage the medically compromised patient creating an awareness of when to treat and when to refer a patient.
  9. To be able to independently admit patients, write orders, ask for proper consults and be comfortable performing dentistry in the operating room.
  10. To gain knowledge or skill to independently manage and treat dental alveolar fractures as well as the initial management and treatment of fractures of facial bones

Dental Emergencies

  1. To recognize, anticipate, manage and treat emergency problems related to the oral cavity, especially difficult and challenging cases
  2. To gain the skill and knowledge to recognize, anticipate, manage and independently provide treatment of acute infection of oral origin
  3. To gain the skill and knowledge to recognize, anticipate, manage andindependently provide treatment of hemorrhage of the oral cavity
  4. To gain the skill and knowledge to recognize, anticipate, manage and independently provide treatment of traumatic injuries to the dentoalveolar structures

Pain and anxiety control utilizing behavioral and/or pharmacological techniques

  1. To understand the use of IV sedation

Implants

  1. To understand and/or gain knowledge in the treatment planning and management and provide treatment of dental implants
  2. To manage and perform the surgical aspect of implants
  3. To understanding and/or gain knowledge implant concepts and design

Oral Mucosal Diseases

  1. To gain knowledge or skill to manage and treat diseases of the soft tissues
  2. To gain knowledge or skill to manage, treat and independently perform biopsies of oral tissue and follow up with the patient when the results are confirmed.

Medicine

To provide treatment that includes:

a) obtaining and interpreting the patient’s chief complaint, medical, and social history, and review of systems;
b) obtaining and interpreting clinical and other diagnostic data from other health care providers;
c) using the services of clinical, medical, and pathology laboratories;
d) understanding of a history and physical evaluation and collect other data in order to establish a medical assessment

Medical Emergencies

  1. To gain skill and/or knowledge to evaluate and treat medical emergencies

Consultations

  1. To independently provide dental care as a part of an inter-professional health care team such as that found in a hospital.
  2. To independently use proper hospital protocol when treating and managing patients in a hospital environment.
  3. To independently perform dental consultations and request medical consultations for hospitalized patients and patients in other health care settings.
  4. To independently request and respond to requests for consultations from physicians and other health care providers.
  5. To independently understand and utilize an inpatient hospital chart and to coordinate the dental treatment with other departments in the hospital

Inpatients/Same Day Surgery

Residents will gain the skill to independently manage inpatients or same-day surgery patients, including:

  • reviewing medical histories and physical examinations;
  • prescribing treatment and medication;
  • providing care in the operating room; and
  • preparing the patient record, including notation of medical history, review of physical examination, pre- and post-operative orders, and description of surgical procedures.

The PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Rotation

Consists of time after-hours in the ER under the direct supervision of the emergency department attendings. This rotation provides knowledge to anticipate, diagnose and treat medical emergencies that may occur during dental treatment, gain skill and/or knowledge to evaluate and treat medical emergencies as well as:

  • obtaining and interpreting the patient’s chief complaint, medical, and social history, and review of systems;
  • obtaining and interpreting clinical and other diagnostic data from other health care providers;
  • using the services of clinical, medical, and pathology laboratories;
