Program Overview

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health, is sponsored by Rutgers University and is a two-year program designed to train future infectious disease clinicians. The fellowship provides a broad based clinical experience in the practice of infectious diseases including diagnosis, management and prevention application of evidence-based methods of problem solving, decision-making and a quality approach to patient care, driven by humanistic and professional values.

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has sub-specialists in all areas of medicine with active residency and fellowship programs that span virtually every specialty, including Internal Medicine, IM-Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Cardiology, Pulmonary/ICU Critical Care, Hematology/Oncology, and Nephrology. Physicians work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary approach for optimal patient care.

The program offers a wide range of clinical experience in all aspects of infectious diseases. There is a very active heart and lung transplant program with opportunities to address post transplant infection that can occur. Implanted Cardiac devices including pacemakers, ICD’s, and Left Ventricular Assist Devices implanted by a robust cardiology and electrophysiology service are monitored for potential infections.

Fellows will gain vast experience in Heart & Lung Transplant Infections, Sepsis and Septic Shock, Bacterial Infections, Fungal Infections, HIV/AIDS and Opportunistic Infections, Antiretroviral Medications, PrEP for HIV, COVID-19 and its mutational variants, Respiratory Viruses, Meningitis-Encephalitis, Infective Endocarditis, Cardiac Implanted Device Infections, Osteomyelitis, Epstein Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus, Hepatitis B & C Viruses, Syphilis, Tuberculosis and Non-TB-Mycobacterial Infections, C. Difficile Infections, Travel Trip Vaccinations, Malaria, STD’s, Tele-Health, and Public Health.

The Infectious Disease (ID) Fellow will have numerous teaching opportunities as all of the Internal Medicine residents are required to do an ID rotation and assist the fellow with the inpatient consultation service when on ID rotation. The ID Fellow will also work closely with the Pulmonary/ICU Fellow during their ID rotation. For 1 month, fellows will go to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, for a unique microbiology lab rotation which acclimates them to various bacterial, fungal, and viral diagnostic technologies. The Fellows will also have an option to do an away rotation at another hospital’s ID Fellowship Program as an elective if they wish to pursue it.

The outpatient experience includes a large Ryan White funded HIV program that is a national leader for having high rates of virally suppressed/controlled patients with over 1000+ HIV patients. There is a Hepatitis B & C Virus Clinic, ID Clinic, Travel Related Trip Clinic, and Tele-Health clinics. These clinics provide a comprehensive clinical experience and numerous options for the future, whether continuing to practice as inpatient vs. outpatient or a combination of both.

The Infectious Diseases Fellow is expected to master the clinical skills in interviewing the patients, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic testing strategies, therapeutic options, counseling and disease prevention. Our goal is to assure the Infectious Diseases Fellow’s development into independent Infectious Diseases Consultants, capable of providing expert care throughout any geographical regions in the USA post-graduation.

The program provides a unified experience that allows the Infectious Diseases Fellow to develop excellence in the competencies specified by the ACGME as they apply to the specialty of Infectious Diseases.

Newark Beth Israel Infectious Disease Fellowship is accredited by the ACGME.
