About the Residency Program of Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a fully accredited four-year
Residency Program with full-time and voluntary teaching staff. The department
is both academically and clinically oriented and practices evidence-based
medicine. Our residents are trained by a multitude of methods and all
education time is protected. There are regularly scheduled lectures, grand
rounds, guest lectures, journal clubs, simulation training in Obstetrics,
a laparoscopic curriculum and simulation training, and a robotic curriculum
and simulation training. Both the Department and our Graduate Medical
Education office support resident attendance at a variety of outside conferences.
Our program makes available a number of international experiences. Residents
have accompanied faculty and attendings to Haiti, the Dominican Republic,
Peru, India and Africa. These experiences are available to all eligible
The Residency Program provides a high volume of general Obstetrics and
Gynecology practiced with local generalists and sub-specialists on staff.
There are also rotations through many sub specialty programs during the
four years. In addition, each resident completes one major research project,
suitable for publication during his or her tenure. This project is presented
in the last year of training at our annual Resident Research Day.
The program appoints six residents at each of the four levels of post-graduate
training. Many residents stay locally to practice general Obstetrics and
Gynecology, and a good percentage go on to fellowships, most of who are
accepted at their first choice of programs.
