About Cardiopulmonary Inpatient & Outpatient Services
With the advent of new diagnostic and treatment options, an improved model
for cardiac care can be found at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus
(MMCSC). Due to the fact that it is part of RWJBarnabas Health Heart Centers,
patients can access integrated diagnostic, medical and surgical services
that offer a full range of advanced cardiac services. These services include:
diagnosis, imaging, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, the
management of heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation.
RWJBarnabas Health Heart Centers offer patients sophisticated care in the
vicinity of their home as well as immediate transfer ability to tertiary
level care at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Newark Beth Israel Medical
Center. This approach offers patients at any of our hospitals the combined
expertise of a broad range of cardiac specialists and the benefits of
the most up-to-date technological advances. Common access to technology
and imaging systems ensure that physicians can immediately view images
and consult with colleagues across all of the Heart Centers.
Our experienced team at MMCSC provides services to both inpatients and
outpatients that improve the quality of life for people with congenital
heart defects and heart disease. Our full-service, invasive and non-invasive
laboratories provide stress tests, 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram
monitoring (Holter) services and echocardiography.
With state-of-the-art Xcelera multi-modality imaging technology and Tom
Tec analytical software especially in 3D environment of ultrasound, physicians
at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus can quickly review echocardiography
studies and with pin-point accuracy. This information can also be shared
with referring physicians and other health care professionals throughout
Outpatients are required to bring a physician prescription indicating the
type of test and reason for the test, along with a physician referral,
if needed. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call

The benefits of full-digital echocardiography include superior quality
of cardiac ultrasound images which translate into greater diagnostic accuracy,
easy and universal accessibility, and better communication between primary
and specialist physicians. Patients benefit from the most advanced echocardiography
modalities, including transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography
with treadmill exercise or pharmacological agents, and color Doppler echocardiography.
Echocardiographs can be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis,
they are painless and generally take about one hour to complete.
MMCSC is now able to offer 3D Echocardiographs with enhanced features.
It has become clear that any question that one seeks to address with 2D
echocardiography can be answered more completely, more directly and with
greater accuracy using Live 3D Echo. Live 3D Echo can help verify the
information obtained with 2D Echo, improving diagnostic confidence and
clinical efficiency, particularly in cases of complex and/or multiple
Qualitative benefits include:
- More effective and descriptive communication of abnormalities between imaging
specialists and other medical personnel/surgical staff.
- Better appreciation of the position of structures/defects in relation to
each other and other heart structures.
- Accurate description of valve scallops and characteristics in planning
- Live assessment of valve functional dynamics.
Accurate visualization during invasive procedures:
- Relative 3D position of catheters during ablation or biopsy procedures
without resorting to ionizing methods.
- Evaluation of commissures for splitting/stretching during valvotomy procedures.

About Cardiac Rehabilitation
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Outpatient Program at MMCSC combines the latest
concepts of cardiovascular rehabilitation, optimizing the patient’s
physical, mental and social abilities. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
has three phases.
- Phase I: Occurs while the patient is still in the hospital recovering from
a coronary event. The rehab in these early days is more educational than physical.
- Phase II: Patients learn how to live with their heart ailment. The emphasis
is on conditioning the heart by strengthening it through exercise. Patients
participate in a comprehensive exercise and rehabilitation program under
the direct supervision of an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses
- Phase III: Graduates of Phase II may elect to participate in a self-monitored,
