After your procedure, you will be taken to the first stage recovery area where you will be monitored for approximately 30 minutes or longer, depending on the type and length of your procedure and anesthesia. As the anesthesia wears off, you will be transferred to a second stage recovery area where you will be joined by a family member or escort, if desired, until discharge.
Upon meeting the criteria for discharge, you will be able to leave the facility. For your safety
you will not be permitted to leave alone following the administration of anesthetic drugs.
Please make arrangements for someone to drive you home. If you are relying on a taxi, please arrange for another adult to accompany you. If you are driving your child home, we recommend that you bring another adult to attend to your child. Please have your ride waiting for you at the designated facility.
Before you leave the facility, you will be provided with specific written discharge instructions for your home recovery. A nurse will review any special instructions including when to schedule a follow-up visit with your surgeon. If you have any additional concerns or questions, please call your physician's office.
After you have returned home, please be sure to follow your physician's recommendations regarding diet, rest, medication and activity. Unless directed otherwise, your diet should consist of bland foods. You may resume your normal diet within 24 hours of your procedure. Please be advised you may feel drowsy, light-headed or dizzy for a few hours after your procedure.
Do not sign any important papers or make any significant decisions for 24 hours following the procedure. Also, do not drive a car, smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, operate machinery or cook for 24 hours following the procedure.
A nurse from the facility will follow up with you the day after your surgery and answer any questions. Should you miss this call, please contact the facility and indicate that you would like to discuss a post-operative report.
If for any reason you experience any problems following surgery, please call your Physician or if not available, please visit your nearest Emergency Room.
