Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Network recently held a Psychiatric Symposium
to explore integrated collaborative approaches in caring for patients
with mental illness and addiction. Hosted by Barnabas Health Behavioral
Health Center in Toms River, more than 100 health care professionals throughout
the Network attended.
The day-long symposium covered lectures on important issues facing health
care professionals, including: “Population Health Impact on the
Mental Health Patient and Healthcare,” presented by Jennifer Velez,
JD, senior vice president of community and behavioral health, RWJBarnabas
Health; “Prescription Opioid Addiction and Abuse,” presented
by Stephan Uhlyar, PharmD, pharmacy practice resident, Saint Barnabas
Behavioral Health Center; and “Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient
Who Self-Medicates,” presented by Mary Jane Maser, PhD, APN. Other
topics included: Mental Health Crisis - the Patient Experience and Diabetes
in the Mentally Ill Patient.
“As one in four Americans experiences a mental illness or substance
abuse disorder each year, and a majority of these patients are also affected
by a comorbid physical health condition, it’s critical for the health
care community to stay informed, collaborate and share best practices
so we can deliver the best patient outcomes possible,” said Teresita
(Tess) Medina, MAS, BSN, RN-BC, chief nursing officer, Barnabas Health
Behavioral Health Network.
