The Barnabas Health Heart Centers have earned the American Heart Association's (AHA) prestigious Gold Award in heart failure treatment. This advanced level of recognition acknowledges hospitals that have demonstrated compliance in the AHA's established heart failure achievement measures as outlined in its Get With The Guidelines® Heart Failure program. Get With The Guidelines® is the AHA's collaborative quality improvement program, demonstrated to improve adherence to evidence-based care of patients hospitalized with heart failure.
Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough oxygenated blood to meet the needs of the body's other organs. The heart keeps pumping, but not as efficiently as a healthy heart. Usually, the heart's diminished capacity to pump reflects a progressive, underlying condition.
"The Barnabas Health Heart Centers provide patients with a progressive heart failure management program that empowers them to improve their heart health," explains Charles J. Mattina, MD, FACC, Medical Director, Heart Failure Program, Barnabas Health Heart Center at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. The Centers' Heart Failure program assists patients in managing symptoms through daily medical monitoring, education and counseling, to help them avoid unnecessary hospital visits. "We are proud to receive this recognition from the American Heart Association," adds Dr. Mattina. "It further illustrates our strong commitment to quality patient care that assists in improving lives and keeping our communities healthy."
