Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Announces New Medical Director of Heart Transplant Program:


One of the Top Ten Adult Heart Transplant Programs in the Nation

Jose C. Mendez, MD, FACCJose C. Mendez, MD, FACC, has been named Medical Director of the Heart Transplant program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility located in Newark, NJ.

Dr. Mendez joins the facility from Baylor University Medical Center where he was an integral part of the heart transplant team and served as program director of the Heart Failure and Transplant Fellowship Program. Prior to his work at Baylor, Dr. Mendez served as the Medical Director of the Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.

“I am proud to join the esteemed medical staff at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and to begin collaboration with the outstanding clinicians who have elevated the facility’s heart transplant program to one of the ten largest in the United States,” says Dr. Mendez, an investigator in nearly 40 research projects.

As Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program at NBIMC, one of the top ten adult heart transplant programs in the nation, Dr. Mendez will “oversee the medical operations of the program,” according to Mark J. Zucker, MD, JD, Director, Cardiothoracic Transplantation, NBIMC and Clinical Professor of Medicine, Rutgers NJ Medical School, who provides leadership and oversight to the program at NBIMC.

“Dr. Mendez will be crucial to lending his expertise to the further development of our program, which is approaching a milestone of 1,000 hearts transplanted.”

Dr. Mendez is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology with special qualifications in Critical Care Medicine; is a member of Heart Failure Society of America, American Society of Transplant Physicians, and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation; and is a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology.
