Toms River, NJ -- With 25 years as a Barnabas Health employee, eight of which have been spent at Barnabas Health Van Dyke Hospice, Liz Dorick knows what it takes to oversee the volunteer program for one of the region’s leading providers of specialized care for patients and families coping with advanced illness.
As the Community Engagement Coordinator for Volunteer Services at Barnabas Health Van Dyke Hospice, Liz manages all aspects of the volunteer program, including overseeing the training, education and assignments of more than 80 volunteers involved with Van Dyke Hospice. Liz also supervises recruitment and retention and oversees the speakers’ bureau, which provides health and wellness presentations throughout the community.
The Toms River, NJ resident recently shared her expertise by participating in the New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NJHPCO) 2013 Volunteer Conference, where she presented information on the essential role of veterans in providing end-of-life-care for other veterans.
“Our veteran-to-veteran program illustrates the importance of seeking veterans to volunteer to help provide end-of-life care to other veterans. Many veterans have a sense of camaraderie and have a stoic way about them, and because of this they often have a hard time opening-up to others. We’re actively recruiting veterans to volunteer to help these veteran patients share their feelings and cope with their end-of-life care,” said Dorick. “We embrace our mission to serve America’s veterans as a way of thanking them for the sacrifices they have made for us.”
A graduate with a B.A. from the University of Delaware, Liz is a member of the Corporate Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society and is involved in their annual Tides of Change Gala, which supports the ACS mission to help cancer patients on their journey. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, a nonprofit that recently honored her as a “Woman of Distinction.”
