Meet Home Health Coordinator Eileen Kennelly

02/12/2014

As a home health coordinator for Barnabas Health Home Care, there's no such thing as a typical day for Eileen Kennelly. Responsible for overseeing the schedules of 10 home health aides, Eileen ensures the care of approximately 40 patients each day.

"My work day starts the minute I walk in – and, sometimes, even before that!" said Eileen, who occasionally receives phone calls before office hours from aides who have arrived at a patient's home early or have a question on an assignment. "The most important thing and my main focus is to make sure our aides go out and provide patients with the care they need and deserve."

Before making the switch to home care three years ago, Eileen, of Toms River, worked in the Emergency Department (ED) for 10 years at Community Medical Center, also a Barnabas Health facility.

"I really liked working for Barnabas Health as a system, but I wanted a change of pace," said Eileen. "Working in the ED at Community Medical Center came with the immediate satisfaction of seeing patients being treated and healed. Home care is a bit different in that the rewards are more gradual."

"I often receive calls from patients thanking us. It's satisfying to know that we assist people in retaining their independence while providing them with some help around the house, whether that's running an errand or completing basic chores," she said.

Some of the services patients require are a bit more complex and may necessitate the care of skilled nurses or physical therapists. Eileen ensures patients receive the appropriate level of care, including those requiring long-term or live-in help.

In addition to facilitating patients' needs, Eileen also handles payroll and accounts payable and organizes job fairs throughout the year to recruit certified home health aides to join the Barnabas Health Home Care team.

"My favorite part of each day is when a patient calls and expresses their gratitude – it happens at least once a day," said Eileen. "They're so thankful that we send someone to their homes to help them with daily activities, and their minds are at peace knowing that someone will be back the next day. It's rewarding to know you're making a difference."

When she's not working, Eileen enjoys going to the beach and spending time with her family.
