Toms River Nurse Serves as a Resource to Helping Patients Get Well at Home

A nurse for 34 years, Debbie Argenio has seen a range of medical issues in a variety of settings – from hospitals to nursing homes to home care. She began working with Barnabas Health 12 years ago as a case manager with Home Care and found the field so rewarding that she decided to stay. Today, Debbie serves as assistant director of patient services for Barnabas Health Home Care in Toms River and oversees a team of 10 nurses.

"After working in so many different areas of health care, I really wanted one-on-one time with patients," said Debbie. "I especially love the education component of Home Care – much of our day is spent educating patients and their families about the disease process and medications."

As assistant director of patient services, Debbie's work day usually begins by assigning nurses their visits for the day. She calls patients to make sure they're home safely from the hospital and notifies them that a nurse will be sent out to their home. Debbie also facilitates the nurses' needs while they're in the field, including following-up with doctors for prescriptions, wound care management, orders for blood work, IV therapy and medication management to prevent re-hospitalization. Her favorite part of her job, however, is overseeing a team of nurses and assisting them in their career development.

"I'm able to share my passion with the nurses and help them with case management and instruct them on how to best educate their patients. By teaching them these important skills, I'm able to touch more lives – both the nurses and each of the patients in their care," she said.

Debbie is a member of the Home Care Association of New Jersey. She earned an associate's degree from Bergen Community College in Paramus and is currently enrolled in Kean University's BSN program. A Toms River resident, Debbie describes herself as a typical Jersey girl who loves reading on the beach.
