Robert Adamson, PharmD, Vice President of Clinical Pharmacy Services at Barnabas Health, was recently named Fellow of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) and appointed Chair of the organization’s 2014 Nominations Committee. He is the second Barnabas Health pharmacist to achieve this prestigious standing. Eric Hola, MS, MLS, Director of the Pharmacy at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, earned Fellowship status last year.
ASHP is the nation’s largest pharmacist professional organization whose 40,000 members are working to improve medication use and enhance patient safety. Members develop guidelines, best practices and professional policies that help pharmacists improve the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of medication-related processes and patient care. Members achieving Fellowship status have demonstrated sustained commitment and contributions to excellence in practice for at least 10 years, contributed to the total body of knowledge in the field, demonstrated active involvement in leadership in ASHP and other professional organizations and are involved in educating other pharmacists.
Robert Adamson, PharmD
An active member of ASHP for over 20 years, Dr. Adamson is a national leader in the standardization of medical-use policies for all medications dispensed at hospitals and served as Chair of ASHP’s Public Policy Committee in 2009. “The US legislative bodies look to ASHP to craft policy for medication-related issues and legislation,” said Dr. Adamson. “Our membership continues to be proactive in improving and standardizing clinical pharmacy practices.”
Under Dr. Adamson’s leadership, Barnabas Health’s Clinical Pharmacy Collaborative Network has brought together 35 clinical specialists, clinical coordinators and administrators into a single pharmacy practice that provides high quality, cost effective treatments for patients; professional education and publication of clinical research; and operates under clinical guidelines that include complete documentation of pharmacist activities on a web-based tool. This comprehensive Collaborative Network has served as a model for other healthcare systems across the country.
Eric Hola, MS, MLS
Eric Hola has served in the ASHP House of Delegates from 1999 to 2013. He has been a member and chairperson of the organization’s Board of Canvassers, as well as a member of its Foundation Development Committee and Council on Organizational Affairs. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration. Mr. Hola is a former regional and state-wide President of the New Jersey Society of Health System Pharmacists and was named the NJSHP Pharmacist of the Year in 1999.
Under Mr. Hola’s direction, the pharmacy practice at Saint Barnabas Medical Center has seen many improvements. Pharmacists practice in a decentralized role, available to nurses, physicians, patients and others on the patient care units. The hospital’s 39 pharmacists ensure that each patient receives the most appropriate drug in the correct dose. The pharmacists also counsel patients about the preparation and administration of their medication after discharge from the hospital.
