New Jersey’s Only Lung Transplant Program Welcomes New Physician Leaders

04/17/2015

New Jersey's only lung transplant program, the Barnabas Health Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), is pleased to announce the arrival of Harish Seethamraju, MD, and Roh Yanagida, MD, Ph.D., who will serve as the Program's Medical Director and Surgical Director, respectively. Drs. Seethamraju and Yanagida, who both join the Medical Center from the University of Kentucky, lead a team at NBIMC which offers increased access to single and double lung transplant and comprehensive treatment and management of chronic and complex lung disease.

"We are extremely proud to offer New Jersey residents the opportunity to access a comprehensive, multidisciplinary lung disease program in their home state," said John A. Brennan, MD, MPH, President and Chief Executive Officer, NBIMC, and Executive Vice President, Barnabas Health. "Under the leadership of Drs. Seethamraju and Yanagida, the Program offers a complete evaluation and treatment plan for patients suffering from disabling lung disease and whose conditions continue to worsen despite optimal medical management."

While the primary goal of the Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program is to identify suitable candidates for a transplant, the Program also benefits patients who are not transplant candidates.

The Program offers complete evaluation and treatment plans for patients with lung diseases such as asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, Interstitial Lung Diseases, Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sarcoidosis, Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), Scleroderma, Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis and Pulmonary Hypertension. Support services such as Pulmonary Rehabilitation, pain management and smoking cessation are also available to patients. The center has various ongoing cutting-edge research trials helping patients with end-stage lung disease.

State-of-the-art diagnostic services include CT-guided biopsy, navigational bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound, bronchial thermoplasty, endo bronchial resection of tumors, endobronchial stents, pleurax catheter placement for malignant pleural effusions and whole lung lavage.

For the convenience of patients in central and southern New Jersey, the Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program maintains a satellite office at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, also a Barnabas Health facility. All of the initial examinations and testing necessary to evaluate a person for a lung transplant can be performed at Monmouth Medical Center.
