The Spirit of Children visiting staff of Children's Hospital of New Jersey
Child Life Department, helping make hospitals less scary.
(NEWARK, NJ – October, 2014) Halloween retailer Spirit Halloween brought the fun and excitement of
this upcoming holiday to young patients at Children's Hospital of
New Jersey (CHoNJ) at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center on Wednesday,
October 15. The party was part of the retailer's "Spirit of Children"
program, to the delight of young patients. Launched in 2006, the Spirit
of Children program brings fun & funding to 134 children's hospitals
across the country, and in Canada, during Halloween and all year long
by raising donations for the hospitals' Child Life Departments.
Volunteer Spirit employees provided CHoNJ patients with a Halloween celebration
complete with costumes and décor in addition to activities such
as pumpkin painting and Halloween bringing Halloween to kids who would
otherwise not be able to experience the holiday at home.
"Donations from Spirit of Halloween have made a huge difference for
our children each year," says John A. Brennan, MD, MPH, President
and Chief Executive Officer of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and CHoNJ.
"They greatly enhance the environment for our young patients."
The donation makes a big impact on the inpatient experience. For example,
it has helped fund a part-time Art Therapist position since December 2013.
Art therapy in the pediatric setting helps children cope and allows them
to take an active part in their own healing. Art therapy is an important
tool for insight and discovery. "Making art does not require words
to express feelings" says Anne Reilly, Director of Child Life at
CHoNJ, "Engaging the right side of the brain and its intuitive, creative
and imaginative impulses works well for children because art making reveals
their internal experience in a safe, secure way." Since 2010 CHoNJ's
child life program has received over $150,000 also funding a weekend child
life specialist and playroom supplies in a pinch.
Spirit of Children has raised over $16 Million in cash and merchandise
donations for their partner hospitals since the program's start, and
is making it their goal to raise an additional $5.8 million this year.
Donations are collected in Spirit Halloween stores, and local donations
