Belleville, NJ – In case of a cardiac medical emergency, Belleville Public Schools are now equipped with five additional Automated External Defibrillators, courtesy of Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation.

The AED devices were presented at the school board meeting on June 10 by Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass Medical Center and Justine McCarthy, Director of Special Events, Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation.

President Clyne said, “Clara Mass Medical Center is proud to partner with the Belleville Public Schools. We’re here to serve you and your families and we’re here to keep you healthy.”

Athletic Director Tom D’Elia received the AED devices along with the School Board and said they would be placed in strategic locations around the 4,700-student district – including athletic playing fields. “Our coaches, who are all trained CPR and AED trained, will be able to act within seconds of the incident,” he noted, thanks to the new AED devices.

The defibrillators, which are valued in excess of $10,000 were underwritten by Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation.

“There is a growing public awareness about sudden cardiac deaths occurring among students. With the addition of these five new AED devices, the district will be able to have additional resources during any student or adult heart emergency,” Clyne said.

Jane Kessler, Vice President of CMMC Foundation, added, “Our foundation has been working cooperatively with the school district for months to make this dream come true for them. We’re delighted to support such a worthwhile venture.”

D’Elia said the new devices will be placed at the high school gymnasium, at each of the two middle school gymnasiums, at Clearman Field, where students play softball and soccer; and at the Belleville Municipal Stadium, where students play football and baseball.

CMMC, part of the Barnabas Health system, is also active in providing cardiac and concussion screenings for student-athletes through the Matthew J. Morahan Center for Athletes.
