Newark, NJ – Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, has been chosen as the Essex County “Irishwoman of the Year” and will be honored by county and state elected officials at the 10th Annual Essex County Irish Heritage Celebration on March 25, 2013.
Clyne, who has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center since 2010, has been chosen for her “contributions to civic, health care, and cultural worlds” according to Essex County and will be recognized, along with Charles B. McKenna, the Essex County “Irishman of the Year” who is Chief Counsel to Governor Chris Christie.
“Mary Ellen Clyne is exceptionally deserving of this recognition for her outstanding leadership of Clara Maass Medical Center,” stated Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Barnabas Health. “We are proud of her contributions to the Irish community and to all of the communities served by Clara Maass.”
The 10th annual Irish Heritage Celebration will be held in the 14th Floor conference room of the LeRoy Smith Public Safety Building at 60 Nelson Place in Newark, in the Essex County Court Complex promptly at 12 p.m. on March 25. The Irish Heritage Celebration is one of several cultural observances hosted by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., and Essex County Office of Cultural Diversity and Affirmative Action.
Clyne earned her Ph.D., Master of Science in Nursing Administration and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Seton Hall University. She also previously taught graduate level courses at the university as a Clinical and Adjunct Professor. She has had a long and distinguished career in nursing. Prior to her current position, she served as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services. Before her days at Clara Maass, Clyne held numerous nursing director positions at New Jersey hospitals.
Under Clyne’s leadership, Clara Maass Medical Center has won numerous awards and accolades. In 2013, Becker’s Hospital Review named it one of “100 Hospitals with Great Heart Programs.” It is ranked among the 50 Best Regional Hospitals in the New York Metro Area by U.S. News & World Report. In 2012, it received two Grade “A” scores in Hospital Safety by the Leapfrog Group. HealthGrades awarded Clara Maass an Emergency Medicine Excellence Award. Thomson Reuters named Clara Maass among the top 100 hospitals nationwide in 2012, one of only three hospitals in New Jersey to attain the distinction. In addition, Clara Maass won the Thomson Reuters Everest Award, one of 12 hospitals in the United States to do so. Clara Maass Medical Center was ranked as the second highest in New Jersey for hospital safety by Consumer Reports. It is ranked top in the state for the treatment of Congestive Heart Failure and Heart Attacks by the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services.
