Belleville, NJ – Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC) Foundation celebrated the July and August birthdays, respectively, of Assembly Speaker Emeritus Sheila Y. Oliver, 34th Legislative District, and Councilman Vincent Cozzarelli, Belleville Township, on Thursday, August 31. The two elected officials who were both born at CMMC were honored with personalized stars on the "A Star Is Born" wall on the Medical Center's Labor and Delivery Unit.

The Foundation's "A Star Is Born" campaign celebrates and recognizes individuals born at CMMC through the placement of their names on a plaque in the unit. Speaker Oliver and Councilman Cozzarelli's names and birth dates were added to stars next to that of Essex County Freeholder, Brendan Gill, who was also born at the Medical Center.

Speaker Oliver was born in Lutheran Memorial Hospital, before the Medical Center took the name Clara Maass in honor of the New Jersey born nurse. She recalls often pulling out her birth certificate at a young age, prideful of where she was born. Now, whenever she passes by the Medical Center, she remembers the fondness she has always felt for the care provided there.

"As legislators, one of the things we value most is health care," said Speaker Oliver. "We know what Barnabas Health and Clara Maass Medical Center mean to the community. I'll always be there as a voice and an advocate for Clara Maass."

Councilman Cozzarelli was born, raised and currently resides in Belleville. He was joined by his parents, Vincent Sr. and Georgette, along with an aunt, uncle and cousin, all Belleville residents.

"I was greatly honored to be presented with this recognition from the staff at Clara Maass," Councilman Cozzarelli said. "The true stars are the doctors, nurses and staff that save countless lives on a daily basis. To be honored by them truly humbles me."

"Speaker Oliver and Councilman Cozzarelli have always been so supportive of Clara Maass Medical Center," adds Mary Ellen Clyne, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer, CMMC. "They graciously attend events and ribbon cuttings held here and always lend a helping hand where they can. The staff at Clara Maass was excited to be able to honor them in a permanent way."
