Clara Maass Medical Center Foundation Hosts Annual Golf Invitational Featuring Super Bowl Champion David Diehl

04/26/2016

Super Bowl Champion David Diehl, a sports broadcaster who had an 11-year career as a New York Giants Offensive Lineman, also makes a difference in the lives of patients at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.

His love for sports and community service are connected through a partnership he formed with a medical center that is located about 13 miles from the stadium where he played professional football. The 2016 Clara Maass Medical Center Golf Invitational featuring former New York Giant David Diehl and his friends will take place on Monday, May 9 at the Montclair Golf Club, located at

25 Prospect Avenue, West Orange. Proceeds from this event support patient services and resources. This event will have a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration opens at 10 a.m. followed by brunch in the clubhouse at 10:30 a.m. A cocktail reception and silent auction begin at 6 p.m. followed by an awards reception and dinner. Professional golfers will give lessons to adults who want to learn to play golf.

“Football paved the way for me. To be able to say that I was a lifetime member and play for the team I feel is the best organization in the NFL is truly an amazing accomplishment that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life,” said Diehl, who started in the Super Bowl in 2008 and 2012. “When you consider my family history, my involvement in the Clara Maass Medical Center Golf Invitational is a natural fit. Unfortunately, my father and grandfather both passed away from heart attacks. When I think about them and my beautiful, healthy 9-year old daughter, giving back to adult and pediatric patients just makes sense,” said Diehl, whose current roles include NFL on FOX game analyst, a member of the New York Giants broadcast team and host of a weekly talk show on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

"We are delighted that David Diehl is committed to improving the lives of our patients. The Annual Golf Invitational helps Clara Maass Medical Center consistently deliver award-winning health care services using the state-of-the-art technology," said Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass Medical Center. “We’re anticipating nearly 250 guests, including former and current from players from the National Football League.”

Diehl takes his Honorary Chairman role on the Golf Invitational Committee seriously. Robert Gamba, the Golf Invitational Chairman and Board Member at Clara Maass Medical Center, said, “David Diehl rolls up his sleeves, attends planning meetings and offers great insight. He’s not just lending his name. He’s sharing the kind of leadership that got him selected to play in the 2009 Pro Bowl. We are grateful David and his friends from the NFL are willing to show up for a fun day that helps so many families. I expect the 2016 Golf Invitational to be even better than last year!”

The event features hole-in-one contests to win luxury automobiles and other prizes, mulligans, a silent auction and various individual and foursome awards. For sponsorship or ticket information, please call 973-450-2251 or visit www.barnabashealth.org/claragolf.

Diehl also helped raise awareness about concussions through his work with RWJBarnabas Health and the Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes.
