Dr. Straker Participating for Fifth Time in Susan G. Komen 3-Day Event

Dr. Straker

On October 14, 2016, Michael J. Straker, MD, FACOG, director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC), will join thousands of women and men to walk 60 miles in Philadelphia at the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® to raise money and awareness about breast cancer.

Now in his fifth year of participation, Dr. Straker is committed to taking part in this special walk until a cure for breast cancer is found. He created his team “Dee’s Pearls” in honor of his aunt, Dolores Straker, who battled breast cancer until her death in 2008, and to date has raised approximately $15,000 for the cause.

“As an OB/Gyn physician, I have dedicated my career to women’s health, and anything I can do to support research and funding to eradicate breast cancer is a worthwhile investment of my time and energy,” said Dr. Straker.

Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Komen 3-Day help support Komen’s Research and Training Grant Program and large public health outreach programs for women and men facing breast cancer. The remaining 25 percent helps fund local community and Affiliate support and outreach programs.

Susan G. Komen® is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Since its founding in 1982, Komen has funded more than $889 million in research and provided $1.95 billion in funding to screening, education, treatment and psychosocial support programs serving millions of people in more than 30 countries worldwide.

Dr. Straker’s commitment to the community goes well beyond his involvement with the Komen 3-Day. He has participated as a mentor within the New York City public school system and is an active member of the Montclair Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. In addition, he sits on the board of Deacons at his church, and participates in the Pastoral Care ministry visiting those who are hospitalized or home bound.

In addition to his leadership role at CMMC and a thriving private practice (Bestcare Obstetrics and Gynecology in Nutley, NJ), Dr. Straker is a Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of OB/GYN at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology, working with medical students who rotate through CMMC.
