Community Medical Center Presents August Community Education and Support


TOMS RIVER, N.J., August 1, 2013 – Community Medical Center, a Barnabas Health facility, offers free monthly community education programs and support groups to provide an accessible continuum of care and address the unique needs of those it serves. All programs are held at Community Medical Center unless otherwise noted. Upcoming events include the following:

Free Blood Pressure Screenings
Thursday, August 8 from 3 to 4 p.m.
Held on the second Thursday of each month, these free screenings are offered as a way to gauge risk factors and prevent serious health problems. No appointment is required.

Diabetes Support Group
Monday, August 19 at 2 p.m.
This free monthly support group helps people with diabetes learn how to become self-sufficient in the daily management of the disease. In August, you’ll learn about how to manage high blood sugar. To register, call 732.557.2284.

Diabetes Insulin Pump Support Group
Tuesday, August 20 at 7 p.m.
This free, professionally-run support group offers education and mutual support for those with diabetes who wear an insulin pump or are considering one. August’s topic is entitled “Don’t Over Bolus.” Call 732.557.2284 for more information.

Diabetes Self Management Series
This four session education program focuses on what diabetes is, how it affects your body and understanding what you can eat to maintain good blood sugars.

Classes will be held on Mondays, August 19, 26 and September, 9, 16 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Tuesdays, August 13, 20, 27 and September 3 from 1- 3 p.m.; and Fridays, August 16, 23, 30 and September 6 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

To attend you will need to bring a prescription from your physician and your insurance information. Please call 732.349.5757 to register and for additional information.

Congestive Heart Failure Support Group
Wednesday, August 28 at 1 p.m.
Those who have been diagnosed with congestive heart failure can find support and strength in others during this free monthly group. For more information, call 1-888-724-7123.

Take Control of Your Health: A Chronic Disease Self Management Program
Mondays, September 9, 16, 23 and 30 and October 7 and 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Those living with a chronic disease often struggle to control symptoms. During this six-week course, health coaches will teach participants about chronic illness, help them learn from one another about ways to cope with an illness, and identify ways they can live healthier by managing symptoms of chronic disease. The free program includes lunch and is open individuals with a chronic disease, their families and/or caregivers. Registration is required by calling 732.557.2284.

Caregivers Counseling
Call for an appointment.
Individuals acting as caregivers face unique challenges. This counseling service is available to assist those dealing with the responsibilities associated with being a caregiver to cope with their role. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call at 732-557-3272.
