Jersey City Medical Center Trauma Reverification

11/13/2015

The Port Authority Heroes of 9/11 Trauma Center at Jersey City Medical Center—Barnabas Health has been re-verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT). This achievement recognizes the trauma center’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients in Hudson County.

Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the ACS COT in its current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual. The verification program consists of in-depth trauma center data and process review and an on-site review by a team of experienced trauma surgeons. The ACS COT provides confirmation that the trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients.

Jersey City Medical Center, Barnabas Health System’s only verified trauma center, was awarded a three-year verification by the ACS on November 1. The center was given no deficiencies. The on-site reviewers noted many strengths of the trauma center, including the dedication of the trauma staff and commitment of hospital leadership, the training and skill of the trauma surgeons, an excellent performance improvement process, and a robust injury prevention/community outreach program.

The Trauma Center sees approximately 1000 patients each year, including victims of motor vehicle crashes, pedestrian crashes, falls, and penetrating injuries. It is dedicated to providing optimal care to these patients with immediate response provided 24 hours a day by qualified EMS, Emergency Department, Operating Room, Critical Care, and Surgery personnel.
