Dr. Loki Skylizard Joins Barnabas Health Medical Group in Partnership with Monmouth Medical Center


Specializing in Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgery, New Thoracic Surgeon to Lead Thoracic Oncology Program at Monmouth Medical Center

LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Thoracic Surgeon Loki Skylizard, M.D., has joined Barnabas Health Medical Group, in partnership with Monmouth Medical Center. Dr. Skylizard will serve as Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Thoracic Surgery, and Assistant Program Director of the General Surgery Residency at Monmouth Medical Center. Additionally, he will lead Monmouth Medical Center's comprehensive Thoracic Surgical Oncology Program.

In particular, Dr. Skylizard's Thoracic Surgery practice will utilize a variety a surgical approaches, including minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, advanced endoscopy, and Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), to treat lung cancer, lung nodules, malignant pleural effusions, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), bleb and bullous lung disease, hyperhidrosis, and Myasthenia Gravis.

"Trained in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, patients requiring lung surgery will receive the most advanced and compassionate care," said Dr. Skylizard. "The modern techniques used are significantly less invasive than traditional thoracotomy. These techniques are intended to provide patients with a quicker recovery, less pain, and a speedier return to their family, which greatly aids in the overall health and well being so critical in fighting cancer."

Dr. Skylizard earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his General Surgery residency at Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine Program in Springfield, Massachusetts. He then completed a fully accredited two year residency in Thoracic Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Under the Mentorship of Dr. Robert Cerfolio, Dr. Skylizard was the first physician to complete a 12 month Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Advanced Robotic Thoracic Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

In addition to his medical and surgical education, Dr. Skylizard has additional training in a number of specialty procedures including: single incision surgical techniques and Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy. He also holds certification in Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) with the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Prior to joining Barnabas Health Medical Group and Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Skylizard served as the sole community thoracic surgeon providing minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgical services in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
