Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center Presents “Adult Diabetes Self Management Class”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 29.1 million people or 9.3 percent of the U.S. population have diabetes. To help educate people about the disease, Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) presents "Adult Diabetes Self Management Class" on Wednesdays, October 29 and November 5, 12 and 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (arrive by 6 p.m.) with a follow-up class on Wednesday, December 17 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center.

This four-hour class and follow-up program, recognized by the American Diabetes Association, provides guidance on various topics surrounding diabetes. The first class details the pathology of the disease, types of diabetes, adjusting to self management with family and social support as well as the identification of nutrients on blood glucose and building a meal plan for breakfast. The second class will cover medications for the treatment of diabetes, tracking blood sugars, Hypoglycemia low blood sugars, Hyperglycemia high blood sugars and building a meal plan for lunch. The third class will focus on sick day guidelines, making healthy food choices, prevention and treatment of chronic complications, foot care, coping with long term illness and building a meal plan for dinner. The fourth and final class will discuss tracking blood sugars/hemoglobin A1c, dining out, benefits of exercise and the effects on blood sugars, overall health plan and building a meal plan for snacks.

The Adult Diabetes Self Management Class takes place at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center located at 200 South Orange Avenue in Livingston. This program is fee for service and Medicare reimbursement is also accepted. For more information, please call 973-322-7007.
