LONG BRANCH, NJ - Monmouth Medical Center recently presented the 2016 Monmouth Medical Center-RWJBarnabas Health Arts Impact Scholarship to Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School senior Shannon Corci, who will be entering the exclusive Popular Music Program at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music in the fall.

In 2015, Monmouth Medical Center sponsored the first-ever Monmouth Medical Center-RWJBarnabas Health Arts Impact Scholarship. This is one of four arts impact scholarships offered as a part of the Basie Awards, which has become a valued awards ceremony that recognizes not just outstanding high school drama performances, but also the impact the arts can have on a student moving towards higher education.

“Shannon is a young woman who already has an impressive resume for her talents as a singer/songwriter, but impressed us the most through letters of recommendation praising her for always being mindful to give back to her community,” says Bill Arnold, president and chief executive officer of Monmouth Medical Center. “Rather than performing to ‘get exposure,’ she was the driving force behind several successful fund-raising concerts in support of Superstorm Sandy relief, arts education and youth services, and in her essay, she writes, ‘I have learned that the most gifted people are not necessarily the most successful; it is those who work the hardest and remain humble who shine.’ We were very proud to present the Monmouth Medical Center RWJBarnabas Health Arts Impact Scholarship to Shannon.”

The partnership between the theatre and Monmouth Medical Center began in 2013, when the hospital became the exclusive sponsor of the Basie Awards as a part of the hospital’s ongoing community outreach. As the presenting sponsor of the Basie Awards, Monmouth Medical Center helps the Count Basie Theatre recognize high school students from Monmouth County through an annual awards ceremony held each May.

“Even though our missions are different, our goals are the same: a vision for our community, based on a culture of high expectations and a stellar quality of life,” Mr. Arnold says. “And while our missions differ, our organizations are each experiencing exciting changes, and the hospital supports the growth of the Basie and its vision for the future, which include the creation of a regional center for the performing arts that will encompass an entire city block. Monmouth Medical Center is proud of its longstanding support of the growth and expansion of the historic nonprofit Count Basie Theatre through our advertising in Showtime, the official Count Basie Theater quarterly magazine.”
