Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus to Host Free Prostate Cancer Screening and Awareness Event

08/22/2016

According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men, other than skin cancer. In 2015 alone, there were nearly 28,000 prostate cancer deaths in the United States and an estimated 270,000 worldwide.

Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will team up with the Lakewood BlueClaws and Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure to raise awareness of this deadly disease and provide free, simple prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests on Tuesday, August 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. when the BlueClaws take on the Kannapolis Intimidators at First Energy Park in Lakewood.

Representatives from the Laboratory at Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will be on hand during the game to provide PSA screenings, supported by a charitable contribution from Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Inc. PSA is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland, and the PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man's blood. Additionally, Monmouth Medical Center urologist Pierre Mendoza, M.D., will be on hand to answer questions about prostate cancer.

Fans for the Cure, a national organization that seeks to save lives and preserve the quality of men’s lives by promoting the importance of identifying prostate cancer in its earliest stages, joins Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus in encouraging all men over 40 to speak with their doctors about prostate cancer, especially those whose family histories and/or race/ethnicity indicate increased risk factors for the disease. Early baseline and follow-up PSA blood tests often lead to both early detection and a greater range of non-invasive treatment options.
