Kimball Medical Center Presents May Community Health Education Programs & Support Groups

Health Education Programs:

Self Defense and Exercise for All Ages
Mondays, May 13 and 27 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Don’t be a target. This ongoing program is for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from personal assaults, street attacks and abductions. A black-belt instructor teaches participants to use leverage and balance to stay safe. This class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Space is limited and registration is required by calling 1.888.724.7123.

Thursdays, May 9 and 23 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.
Learn to protect yourself from future falls through exercise, balance and strength training. A black-belt instructor will teach participants to ward-off assaults and attacks using leverage. This class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Classic and Gentle Yoga for All Ages
Fridays, May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31
Classic: from 9 to 10:15 a.m.
Gentle: from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.
Men and women of all ages can enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility, range of motion, energy and relaxation by participating in Friday morning classic or gentle yoga. Gentle enough for beginners and seasoned practitioners, classic yoga includes the sun salutation warrior pose and shoulder stand, and gentle yoga includes the full range of basic yoga stretches and positions. The classes are held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Cost is $5 per class, and space is limited. Drive Defensively
Monday, May 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This national Safety Council refresher course is perfect for drivers of all ages who need to sharpen their driving skills. Completing this approved workshop eliminates two points from your New Jersey driver’s record. Cost for the basic defensive driving course is &8, payable by check or money order to County of Ocean and an additional $10 money order made payable to the National Safety Council. Presented by the Ocean County Department of Safety, the course will be held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Space is limited, and registration is required by calling 1.888.724.7123.

Diabetes Self-Management Education
Tuesdays, May 7, 14 and 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
More than 25.8 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. Learn how to manage your diabetes with this program, taught by registered nurses and registered dietitians – all certified diabetes educators. This program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Registration is required by calling 1.888.724.7123. Program attendees will need a doctor’s prescription and will be billed to Medicare or your insurance carrier.

Caregivers Support Group
Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28 from noon to 2 p.m.
AND Wednesdays, May 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m.
This ongoing weekly support group is open to anyone who is caring for a personage 60 or older living in Ocean County. It is sponsored by Kimball Medical Center and the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. Facilitated by Kathleen Holahan, MSW, LCSW, this group is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Bereavement Support Group
Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m.
AND Tuesdays, May 14 and 28 from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Learn what to expect in the grieving process and how to deal with your expectations as well as the expectations of others in this group, sponsored by Kimball Medical Center and the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group
Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This free ongoing support group helps participants learn and share with others facing the unique challenges of being a “grandfamily.” Facilitated by Kathleen Holahan, MSW, LCSW, this group is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Diabetes Support Group
Thursday, May 16 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Presented by The Center for Healthy Living at Kimball Medical Center and partially funded by The Ocean County Office of Senior Services, this monthly group offers support for those living with diabetes. May’s group meeting will focus onNational Arthritis Month and Skin Cancer Awareness Month. This group is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood.
