Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus Presents May Senior Community Programs

Open Balance and Blood Pressure Screenings
Tuesday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, millions of adults aged 65 and older fall and receive moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures and head traumas. In an effort to promote healthier lifestyles, the Center for Healthy Aging will provide open balance and blood pressure screenings at the County Connection at the Ocean County Mall, located at 1201 Hooper Avenue in Toms River. Osteoporosis 101 and Free Bone Density Screenings
Tuesday, May 5 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Osteoporosis affects men and women of all ages. The Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will host a presentation on osteoporosis and discuss risk factors and how to recognize its signs and symptoms. Free bone density screenings and refreshments will be provided following the presentation, which takes place at the Ocean County Library, Jackson Township Branch located at 2 Jackson Drive in Jackson. Registration is required by calling 732-928-4400.

Summer Safety for Seniors
Tuesday, May 12 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Summertime is finally quickly approaching! Everyone should enjoy the sunshine and great weather, but also keep safety in mind. Seniors can stay safe this summer by learning the necessary precautions to take during Summer Safety for Seniors. This free program is presented by the health coaches from the Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus who will discuss the precautions that seniors need to take in the summer. Topics include heat illnesses, summer safety, medication precautions and travel safety tips. This program takes place at the Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center located at 331 Georgia Tavern Road in Howell. This program is free but registration is required by calling the Monmouth County Parks System at 732-928-4400.

Geriatric Emergency Medicine Lunch and Learn
Monday, May 18 from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
Emergency departments are increasingly challenged with the complexities of providing care for geriatric patients. In response, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus has introduced a Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) unit to best address the unique needs of seniors. In this program, Dr. Victor Almeida, Chair of Emergency Medicine at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will discuss the benefits of the GEM unit as well as how you can recognize the signs of an emergency. This program, open to those 60 and older living in Jackson Township, will take place at the Jackson Township Senior Center located at 45 Don Connor Boulevard in Jackson. Osteoporosis affects men and women of all ages. The Center for Healthy Aging, in cooperation with the Pharmacy Department at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, will host a presentation on osteoporosis and discuss risk factors and how to recognize its signs and symptoms. Presented by Barbara Greenberg-Schwartz, RPh, CCHP, this program will discuss the dos and don'ts of osteoporosis medications. Free bone density screenings and lunch will be provided following the presentation, which takes place at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 500 River Avenue, Suite 200 in Lakewood. This program is free but registration is required by calling Kelly DeLeon at 732-597-6075.

Toms River Senior Center Health Fair
Friday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join the Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus at an informational health fair hosted by the Toms River Senior Center. The fair, hosted by the Toms River Municipal Alliance and cosponsored by Barnabas Health, will provide entertainment, a picnic lunch and giveaways. The event, open to residents 60 and older, will be held at the Toms River Senior Center located at 652 Garfield Avenue in Tomas River. For more information, call 732-341-1000 x8461.

Ocean County YMCA Senior Health and Fitness Celebration
Wednesday, May 27 at 8:30 a.m.
Join the health coaches form the Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and other hospital representatives at the Ocean County YMCA's annual Senior Health & Fitness Celebration. Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus staff will be providing free health screenings, information and giveaways while older adults of Ocean County enjoy health and fitness related activities presented by the Y. The event takes place at the Ocean County YMCA located at 1088 W. Whitty Road in Toms River. No registration is required.
