The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus recently announced it has expanded its menu of services for breast care, now offering diagnostic imaging services in addition to regular screenings.
Breast cancer screenings usually consist of annual mammograms for women over age 40. Diagnostic services such as ultrasound and diagnostic mammograms – now offered at the Wilentz Center's Lakewood satellite – are used when the results of a regular screening mammogram are abnormal or undetermined.
"You might have your screening on Monday, and then get called the next day for a for a diagnostic mammogram," says Portia Lagmay-Fuentes, Regional Cancer Services Administrator at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, adding that expanding access to diagnostic services in the community helps women obtain necessary follow-up testing more quickly. "We don't want women to have to wait a week, and having this service here at the Southern Campus gets patients back much more quickly."
According to Ilona Hertz, M.D, a diagnostic radiologist at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus who specializes in breast imaging, mammograms are usually read one to two days after they are taken, but with diagnostic imaging such as additional special mammographic images and ultrasound, "the radiologist is onsite and reads the images right away." That way, if treatment is required, she says, it can begin as soon as possible.
Advances in radiology are making mammograms more effective than ever in spotting malignancies, Dr. Hertz explains – as long as women are diligent about scheduling their annual screenings. The expanded diagnostic services at the Wilentz Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus offer women in Ocean County high quality care, close to home, making it easier than ever to obtain the diagnostic tools they need to stay healthy.
"The earlier you find cancer, the more likely we are to be able to treat it and the less treatment is needed," says Dr. Hertz. "We are trying to give women the easiest way possible to get imaging performed, and now they don't have to travel far to do it."
The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus is located at 500 River Avenue (about a block north of the hospital) Suite 200, in Lakewood.
