Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus Foundation recently approved $512,000 in funding to create the hospital's Geriatrics Institute to build upon its comprehensive, integrated senior health services.
The approximately 5,000 square-foot Geriatrics Institute will feature exam rooms, administrative offices, a meeting room and an exercise room, enhancing Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus' interdisciplinary approach to caring for the elderly.
"Our goal in establishing the Geriatrics Institute is to provide quality-driven, safe, efficient, responsive, cost-effective health services that are centered on meeting the needs of our elderly patients and their families," said Jessica Israel, MD, the medical director of the new Geriatrics Institute and section chief, geriatrics and palliative care at both Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and its sister hospital in Long Branch. "This new initiative will complement the hospital's full continuum of programs and services focused on serving older adults."
The Lakewood-based hospital has implemented several programs within the past few years to address the needs of the region's growing elderly population – according to U.S. Census Bureau data from 2013, nearly 22 percent of Ocean County residents were age 65 and older.
In 2014, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus unveiled its Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Unit to address the complexities or urgent care among this group, as adults age 65 and older account for approximately 20 percent of Emergency Department admissions.
Patients visiting the GEM Unit have access to an interdisciplinary team of specially trained geriatric medicine caregivers who work with referring physicians, a dedicated pharmacist, and consults with a board-certified geriatrician.
In addition, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus offers an array of hospital-based geriatrician outpatient and post-acute services, an Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit and
post-acute provider relationships and transitions in care to reduce readmissions. Health coaches from the Center for Healthy Aging provide community-based education and awareness programs, offering seniors in the region with convenient access to preventive care.
