COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION
Elderfest
Thursday, November 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will be participating in Elderfest, a senior lifestyle expo focusing on health, wellness and laughter. The event will include health screenings, crafters, giveaways, chair massages and more! Elderfest will take place at the Clarion Hotel, 815 Route 37 West, Toms River. The event is free. Self-Defense for Older Adults – New Day and Time!
Thursday, November 3 & 17 from 3 to 4 p.m.

Learn to protect yourself from future falls through exercise, balance and strength training. At Self-Defense for Older Adults, a black-belt instructor will teach participants to ward-off assaults and attacks using leverage. Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Coping with Caregiver Stress
Friday, November 4 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other form of dementia can become an overwhelming experience. Often, caregivers neglect their own well-being because they are devoting so much time to the responsibilities of day-to-day caregiving. Led by Scott Reid, MS, of Alzheimer’s New Jersey, this program will discuss caregiver stress and examine strategies for coping with it in order to become a healthier caregiver. This program, which is free, will take place at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Chair Yoga
Fridays, November 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 2 to 3 p.m.

Join the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus on Fridays to “get fit while you sit” as they present Chair Yoga, an exercise class for seniors. Relax your mind and body from a seated position, without the worry of getting up and down on the floor. Learn how to improve muscle tone, increase flexibility and circulation and alleviate stiff joints, all while increasing your overall health and well-being. This program will be held at the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Each session costs $5.

Open Health Screenings
Wednesday, November 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Take charge of your health by keeping up with your health screenings. It is important for people to monitor their health and know their screening numbers. Come out and have your glucose, blood pressure, bone density, and balance tested. This program will take place at the Center for Healthy Living located at 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. This program is free. Registration is required by calling the RWJBarnabas Health Link at 1.888.724.7123.

Five Wishes
Friday, November 9 from 3 to 4 p.m.

There are many things in life that are out of our hands, so it is important to take control of the things you can. The Five Wishes document gives you a way to control something very important - how you are treated if you get seriously ill. The document is an easy-to-complete form that lets you say exactly what you want. Once it is filled out and properly signed it is valid under the laws of most states. Learn more about this valuable document by joining Claire Verruni, RN, expert in palliative and hospice care at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, for this important discussion. The program takes place at the Ocean County Library’s Lakewood Branch, located at 301 Lexington Avenue, Lakewood. This program is free. Registration is required by calling 732.363.1435.

MMCSC Fall Open House
Thursday, November 10 at 4:30 p.m.

At Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, we have been working hard to improve and upgrade our facility, programs and services. We invite the community to come to our open house for a tour and to discover how we have prepared to serve you better. Fall refreshments including cider, apples and donuts will be served. Better Health Members Only Event. Stress is something that affects everyone, so come distress with us! Join us for a discussion on the causes of stress and the impact it could potentially have on your health. Learn how to combat stress with practical and proven relaxation techniques. This event will be held at the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, located at 109 Prospect Street, Lakewood. The Basics of Diabetes
Tuesday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Did you know that 29.1 million people or 9.3 percent of the U.S. population have diabetes? Led by Claire Verruni, RN, this program will provide an overview on prevention, treatment and management of diabetes. Glucose screenings will also be available for those who have fasted for at least 2 hours prior. This program will take place at the Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, located at 331 Georgia Tavern Road, Howell. Registration is required by calling 732.751.9453.

Diabetes Self-Management Education
Thursdays, November 17 & 24 and December 1 & 8 from 10 a.m. to Noon

Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. This program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietician/certified diabetes educator. This education program takes place at the Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. Attendees will need a doctor’s prescription and will be billed to Medicare or your insurance carrier. For more information or to register call 732.923.5025.

Thursday, December 1 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Better Health Members Only Event. Come celebrate a year of healthy living! Join us for a delicious breakfast, seasonal entertainment and time spent with old and new friends. Doors will open at 9 a.m. for a mini health fair prior to the breakfast. The breakfast will take place at Eagles Ridge Golf Club located at 2 Augusta Blvd, Lakewood.
