COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION

All Levels Yoga
Fridays, January 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Better Health Members Only Event. Yoga is great for all body types and levels of fitness. Led by Nicole Franchino, RYT, students will develop body awareness, posture alignment and core strength in basic poses. New and experienced students are welcome and will be encouraged to work at their individual ability and comfort level. This program will be held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 199 Prospect Street in Lakewood. The cost for five one-hour classes is $25. Chair Yoga
Fridays, January 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Join the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus on Fridays to “get fit while you sit” as they present Chair Yoga, an exercise class for seniors. Relax your mind and body from a seated position, without the worry of getting up and down on the floor. Learn how to improve muscle tone, increase flexibility and circulation and alleviate stiff joints, all while increasing your overall health and well-being. This program will be held at the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, located at 199 Prospect Street, Lakewood. Each session costs $5. Open Health Screenings
Wednesday, January 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Take charge of your health by keeping up with your screenings. Come out and have your glucose, blood pressure, bone density and balance tested. This program will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Diabetes Self-Management Series
Thursdays, January 12, 19, 26 and February 2 from 10 a.m. to noon

Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. This program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietician/certified diabetes educator. This education program takes place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Sticking to Your Resolution
Monday, January 16 from 2 to 3 p.m.

Do you make New Year’s resolutions that you just can’t seem to keep? Join us as we discuss setting and achieving realistic health goals and staying motivated throughout the year. Refreshments will be served. This event will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Self-Defense for Older Adults
Thursday, January 19 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.

Learn to protect yourself from future falls through exercise, balance and strength training. At Self-Defense for Older Adults, a black-belt instructor will teach participants to ward-off assaults and attacks using leverage. Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Mindfulness Meditation
Monday, January 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Learn to cope with stress, pain and illness using a moment-to-moment meditation technique. The program will included an introduction from Todd J. Cooperman, MD, FAAPMR, medical director, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, and section chief, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Monmouth Medical Center. Anita Pfisterer, L.C.S.W., Little Silver Behavioral Health, and program facilitator for the Cancer Support Community at Monmouth Medical Center will follow with a presentation on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction techniques. This event will take place at HealthSouth Rehabilitation of Toms River located at 14 Hospital Drive, Toms River. This program is free and registration is required by calling 732.818.4781.

Don’t be a target! This ongoing program is for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from personal assaults, street attacks and abductions. Sponsored by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and the Ocean County Office of Senior Services, this ongoing weekly support group is open to anyone who is caring for a person age 60 or older living in Ocean County.
