COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION

Chair Yoga
Fridays, June 3, 10, 17, & 24 from 2 to 3 p.m.
Join the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus on Fridays to “get fit while you sit” as they present Chair Yoga, an exercise class for seniors. Relax your mind and body from a seated position, without the worry of getting up and down on the floor. Learn how to improve muscle tone, increase flexibility and circulation and alleviate stiff joints, all while increasing your overall health and well-being. This program will be held at the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Each session costs $5.

A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls
Mondays, June 6 through August 1 from 2 to 4 p.m.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, every year more than 1.6 million older U.S. adults go to emergency departments for fall-related injuries. This free, eight-part series will benefit mobile adults by helping reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have this concern. This program, for those ages 60 and older, is designed for those who are concerned about falls, may have sustained a fall in the past, limit their activities because of concerns about falling and are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength. A Matter of Balance uses a variety of activities such as group discussion, problem-solving, skill building, assertiveness training, videotapes, sharing practical solutions and exercise training to help seniors prevent falls. This program will be held at the Manchester Library, located at 21 Colonial Drive, Manchester. Register is required by calling 732.657.7600. Free.

Self Defense for Men & Women of All Ages
Thursday, June 9 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Don’t be a target! This ongoing program is for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from personal assaults, street attacks and abductions. A black-belt instructor will teach participants to use leverage and balance to stay safe. Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Drive Defensively
Monday, June 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus presents Drive Defensively, a one session workshop offered by the Ocean County Department of Safety. This National Safety Council refresher course is perfect for drivers of all ages who need to sharpen their driving skills. Completing this approved workshop will eliminate two points from your NJ State Driver’s record. This class will be held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. The cost for the Basic Defensive Driving Course is $8.00 (make check or money order payable to County of Ocean) and an additional $10.00 (payable by money order only to the National Safety Council). Healthy Mocktail Party with Celebrity Chef, Diane Henderiks
Wednesday, June 15 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Join us for an evening of fun! Better Health Members are invited to this Mocktail Party, an evening of healthy mocktails, hors d’oeuvres and education on the Patio. This party takes place at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, located at 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. All Levels Yoga
Fridays, June 17 through August 5 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Yoga is great for all body types and levels of fitness. This program, by Nicole Franchino, RYT, will instruct students with ways to develop body awareness, posture alignment and core strength in basic yoga poses. All Levels Yoga, open to new and experience students who are Better Health Members, will encourage all attendees to work at their individual ability and comfort level. This program will be held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Complimentary Consults with a Registered Dietician
Tuesday, June 21 at 10:00 a.m.
Private complimentary consultations will be held with Lauren Dorman, MS, RD, CDE to review your diet and discuss healthy meal options. This program, open to Better Health Members only, will be held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Health Screenings
Tuesday, June 21 from 10 to 11 a.m.
The Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will be on hand at the Point Pleasant Senior Beehive at St. Martha’s Church to administer free health screenings. Staff will be offering health screenings to residents over 60. This event will be held at St. Martha’s Church, located at 3800 Herbertsville Road in Point Pleasant. No registration is required.

Build Your Brain
Tuesday, June 21 from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

Just like our bodies, our minds require regular care and maintenance. This free program, led by a health coach from the Center for Healthy Aging from Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, will discusses how cognitive decline (i.e., memory loss, forgetfulness and confusion) is not a normal part of aging. Learn what is normal and what may need to be medically evaluated. This program will be held at the Jackson Senior Center, located at 45 Don Connor Boulevard in Jackson. Lunch & Learn: Solutions for Better Pelvic Health presented by Dr. Michalewski
Wednesday, June 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), which include bladder control problems, bowel control problems and pelvic organ prolapse, impact one in three women at some point in their lives. Join urogynecologist Martin P. Michalewski, M.D., FACOG, for an informative session about PFDs and treatment options that might just change your life. This program is open to the public and will be held at the Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, located at 600 River Avenue, Suite 200 in Lakewood.
