COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION

Tai Chi for Beginners A Better Health Members Only Event
Thursdays, February 2 through March 23 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Free for Better Health Members who are new to tai chi. Led by expert instructor, Kit Lau, Tai Chi can improve balance, coordination and lower body strength. This class will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue in Lakewood. Space is limited, and registration is required by calling 1.888.726.2362.

Tai Chi for Returning Participants
Thursdays, February 2, 9, 16 & 23 from 2 to 3 p.m.

Fee based. Led by expert instructor, Kit Lau, this class is open to all who have completed at least one eight-week Tai Chi session. Cost is $50 for eight classes and is due on or before February 2. This class will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue in Lakewood. All Levels Yoga
Fridays, February 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Fee based. Yoga is great for all body types and levels of fitness. Led by Nicole Franchino, RYT, students will develop body awareness, posture alignment and core strength in basic poses. New and experienced students are welcome and will be encouraged to work at their individual ability and comfort level. $30 fee is due to the instructor on or before February 3. Chair Yoga
Fridays, February 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Fee: $5/per person per class. Relax your mind and body without worry of getting up and down on the floor. Improve muscle tone, enhance flexibility, and increase circulation and your feeling of well-being. This class will be held in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Open Health Screenings

Wednesday, February 8 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Free. February is American Heart Health Month! The secret to preventing heart disease is recognizing and managing your risk factors. Do you know your numbers? Come out and have your glucose, blood pressure, bone density and body mass index (BMI) tested. After screening, enjoy a heart healthy snack! This program will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Diabetes Self-Management Series

Thursdays, February 9, 16, 23 and March 2 from 10 a.m. to noon

Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition and meal plans, glucose monitoring, medications, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. This program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. This series takes place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Attendees will need a doctor’s prescription, and fees will be billed to Medicare or your insurance carrier. For more information or to register, call 732.923.5025.

Self Defense for Men & Women of All Ages
Thursdays, February 9 & 23 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Don’t be a target! This ongoing program is for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from personal assaults, street attacks and abductions. A black-belt instructor will teach participants to use leverage and balance to stay safe. Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Dance for Your Heart
Saturday, February 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free. Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, will present a community event featuring a variety of activities that will include Long Branch Elementary A.A.A. Dance Team performance, fitness, health screenings and overall cardiac risk and health information. Safe Kids of Monmouth and Ocean Counties will host interactive safety games for parents and children as well as dance and sport injury prevention information. Giveaways and door prizes will be offered. This event will take place at the Monmouth Mall, Town Square in front of Macy’s, Route 35, Eatontown Circle and Wyckoff Road, Eatontown. Registration is not required.

Lunch & Learn: Keeping Your Grandkids Safe and Happy While in Your Care!

Monday, February 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We know that your grandkids are some of the most important people in your life, and we want to help you keep them safe and happy. Presented by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and Safe Kids Monmouth/Ocean Counties, this program will discuss current trends in child safety in the home, outdoors and on the road. This session is ideal for grandparents-to-be, new grandparents, and grandparents to children who are 7 and younger. This event will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Get Your Red On – A Better Health Members Only Event
Thursday, February 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

February is American Heart Month! Join us to learn how to keep your heart healthy. Enjoy presentations on heart-healthy living, the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation, stress management and relaxation techniques. This enjoyable and educational afternoon will include a heart-healthy lunch and giveaways. Be sure to support your heart and wear red!
