COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION

All Levels Yoga
Fridays, March 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Fee based: $30. Yoga is great for all body types and levels of fitness. Led by Nicole Franchino, RYT, students will develop body awareness, posture alignment and core strength in basic poses. New and experienced students are welcome and will be encouraged to work at their individual ability and comfort level. Payment is due to the instructor on or before March 3.This class will be held in the 3rd Floor Conference Room of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Chair Yoga
Fridays, March 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Fee based: $5/per person, per class. Relax your mind and body without worry of getting up and down on the floor. Improve muscle tone, enhance flexibility and increase circulation and your feeling of well-being. This class will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Take Control of Your Health
Mondays, March 6 through April 10 from 9 a.m. to noon

Free. Take Control of Your Health is an engaging, six-week, chronic disease self-management workshop that will teach you how to manage pain and chronic conditions by focusing on a positive attitude and adopting healthier lifestyle patterns. This series is open to all who are 65 and older and either have a chronic condition or care for someone that does. This workshop will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Open Health Screenings
Wednesday, March 8 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Free. Do you know your numbers? Come out and have your glucose, blood pressure, bone density and body mass index (BMI) tested. After your screening, enjoy a heart-healthy snack! This event will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. A Matter of Balance
Wednesdays, March 8 through April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon

Free. Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so,A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls is the program for you! A Matter of Balance is an eight-week series designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. This program will be held in the Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. Registration is required by calling RWJBarnabas Health at 1.888.724.7123.

Diabetes Self-Management Series
Thursdays, March 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 10 a.m. to noon

Fee based. Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and the benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietician/certified diabetes educator. This series will be held on the 3rd Floor of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Self Defense for Men & Women of All Ages
Thursdays, March 9 & 23 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Fee based: $15 for five one-hour classes. Don’t be a target! This ongoing program is for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from personal assaults, street attacks and abductions. A black-belt instructor will teach participants to use leverage and balance to stay safe. Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this class is held at the Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. Lunch and Learn: Keeping Your Grandkids Safe and Happy While in Your Care
Monday, March 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free. Things have certainly changed since many of us became new parents! During this program, we will discuss the current trends in child safety in the home, outdoors and on the road! This program is ideal for grandparents-to-be, new grandparents and grandparents to children who are 7 and younger! Presented by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and Safe Kids Monmouth/Ocean Counties, this event will take place in the 3rd Floor Conference Room of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Understanding Nutrition Labels and the Plate Method – Better Health Members ONLY event
Thursday, March 16 from noon to 2 p.m.

Sometimes the information on the side or back of our foods can be confusing and difficult to understand. Nutrition expert and registered dietitian, Lauren Dorman, MS, will show you how to decode the information presented on nutrition labels in your pantry and refrigerator and understand the basics of the plate method. Attendees are encouraged to bring a food label to the event. Lunch will be provided and this event will take place in Conference Room A at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, 600 River Avenue, Lakewood. Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
Tuesday, March 21 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Free. It can sometimes be difficult to get the deep, restful sleep that we all need. Learn techniques to calm the mind, relax the body and release the daily stresses and worries that keep our minds racing at night. This program will take place at the Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, 331 Georgia Tavern Road, Howell. Registration is required by calling 732.751.9453.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group
Wednesdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this free ongoing support group helps participants learn and share with others facing the unique challenges of being a “grandfamily.” Facilitated by Kathleen Holahan, MSW, LCSW, this group is held at the Center for Healthy Living, 198 Prospect Street, Lakewood. Caregivers Support Group
Tuesdays, March 7, 14, 21 & 28 from noon to 2 p.m.

Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and the Ocean County Office of Senior Services, this ongoing weekly support group is open to anyone who is caring for a person who is 60 or older living in Ocean County.
