Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Center for Geriatric Health Care Working To Prevent Hip Fractures, Head Traumas and Risk of Early Death

06/20/2014

With The PSEG Foundation Grand For Falls Prevention Program

(NEWARK, NJ – June, 2014) The PSEG Foundation has awarded Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC) $20,000 to implement a comprehensive Falls Prevention Program for seniors in the community. The Program will include three components including initial education, screenings and enrollment in "Matter of Balance" classes for those at risk.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of three older adults aged 65 or older will fall each year but less than half mention the fall to their healthcare provider. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries. These falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death.

With support from the PSEG Foundation, NBIMC's Center for Geriatric Health Care community outreach team can work to reduce the threat of falls among seniors in the greater Newark area. "The trauma of falls presents special challenges because geriatric patients have different injury patterns that impact care and as well as significant comorbid medical conditions," says Anup Dhage, PT, MS, physical therapist and master trainers for the Essex County program along with nurse practitioner Rashmi Aggarwal, NP.

Programs will be provided at community locations in Newark, Irvington, Elizabeth and Orange and will begin in July. For more information please call the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's Center for Geriatric Health Care at 973-926-6771.
