NBIMC Welcomes the Year of the Goat at the Chinese Medical Program’s Chinese New Year Celebration

(NEWARK, February 19, 2015) Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's (NBIMC) Chinese Medical Program will host its first Chinese New Year celebration on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Noon in the Medical Center cafeteria at 201 Lyons Avenue, Newark, New Jersey. Not only will the celebration include special performances and cultural demonstrations, but will also offer the opportunity to meet some of the physicians in NBIMC's Chinese Medical Program. The celebration kicks-off with dancers from Chinatown's New York Chinese Free Masons Athletic Club who will present a Lion Dance, the ancient Chinese tradition to welcome the New Year. Attendees will also be able to learn about the art of paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy during the afternoon festivities.

New Jersey is home to the country's fourth-largest Chinese population yet many fail to take full advantage of appropriate health care services due to cultural or language barriers. Many diseases are more prevalent in Asians, including gastrointestinal and liver cancers, hepatitis B, diabetes and lupus. Asians have some of the lowest rates of seeking preventative care, such as mammograms and colonoscopies. The initiatives of NBIMC"s Chinese Medical Program are designed to provide advanced medical care with a culturally relevant approach. The goal is to help change these statistics by removing cultural and language barriers so patients become more engaged and have better overall health. The Program's multi-lingual (Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese, Shanghainese) Chinese and Chinese-American coordinators and physicians work to ensure that patients understand their conditions and doctor's recommendations. Research has shown that this can dramatically improve both compliance and outcomes.
