Newark Beth Israel Interventional Radiologist Performs Barnabas Health’s First Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) Via the Wrist

(Newark, NJ)- August 21, 2015 — It is the first procedure of its kind at The Beth, in Newark and in Barnabas Health. Section Chief of Interventional Radiology Suken Shah, MD and his team at the Interventional Radiology Suite at NBIMC are now able to block the blood flow to a fibroid tumor in the uterus through a tiny quarter of an inch incision in the skin on the wrist. From that radial artery access, using real-time imaging, a catheter is threaded to the uterine arteries where tiny sand-sized particles are released into the blood supply around the tumor, causing it to shrink and ultimately for symptoms to subside.

Uterine fibroids, affecting over one third of all women 35 and older, can cause prolonged, heavy menstrual bleeding severe enough to cause anemia, disabling pelvic pain, or can even require a blood transfusion. Normally the access to treat the fibroid has been through the femoral artery in the thigh, but with wrist access, patients experience less pain, can walk immediately after the treatment and return to home in several hours.

The recent expansion of Newark's only Outpatient Interventional Radiology suite, made possible through a grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, has increased the ability to provide convenient, accessible services to patients in the greater Newark community. The Interventional Radiology Suite at NBIMC is located on the 2nd floor of the ABC building. To make an appointment or to inquire about UFE, please call (973) 926-7038.
