NEWARK, NJ (April 6, 2017) -- Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey honored National Donate Life Month with a NJ Sharing Network flag raising ceremony in front of the hospital.

Every day at least 22 people will die waiting for a life-saving transplant in the United States. More than 4,000 New Jersey residents are currently on a transplant waiting list. National Donate Life Month is a time to raise awareness about the powerful impact of organ donation.

“As New Jersey’s only lung transplant center and one of the nation’s most active heart transplant centers, we see the life-saving impact of organ donation, every day,” said Darrell K. Terry, Sr., MHA, MPH, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. “It was an honor to participate in this event with the NJ Sharing Network and with the families whose lives have been forever changed by organ donation.”

The flag raising ceremony commemorated both organ donors, who have given the ultimate gift of life, and transplant recipients. Newark Beth Israel and the NJ Sharing Network were joined by donor families and recipients including, the Newark Beth Israel Hearty Hearts, a group of heart transplant recipients who volunteer their time at the hospital to support patients who are currently awaiting transplant.

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center conducts several awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors and community members about the critical need for organ and tissue donation. In 2016 the hospital received the Platinum Award for organ donation outreach, the highest honor in this category, from the United States Health and Hospitals Association Health Resources and Services Administration.
