(Livingston, NJ) The PSEG Foundation recently awarded New Jersey's only state-certified burn treatment facility, The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center a three- year grant, totaling $210,000 to implement community fire prevention and burn safety programs. "We are thrilled that PSEG has chosen to partner with The Burn Center to provide burn prevention education. We value their commitment to the community and their focus on prevention," states Patricia Balsamini, Vice President, Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation.
"This grant supports a part-time educator who will work with the adult population throughout Essex, Bergen, Passaic, Union and Hudson counties. This grant will devote resources to educating and protecting children and adults," states Michael Marano, MD, Chairman, The Burn Center of New Jersey.
One of the areas of focus will be outreach to seniors. The senior population is a particularly high-risk group for burn injury due to decreased sensory perception and reaction time, impaired mobility, forgetfulness and memory loss. "We appreciate that PSEG recognizes and supports The Burn Center's mission of preventing injury from fire and burns through the identification of hazards and the promotion of community awareness and education," states Kathe Conlon, RN, Burn Education and Program Manager.
The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston was established in 1977. It provides state-of-the-art treatment to nearly 400 patients a year in its 12-bed Intensive Care Unit and 16-bed Step-Down Unit. Its Outpatient Clinic receives about 5,000 patient visits annually.
