Saint Barnabas Medical Center to Host Patient Education Seminar on Customized Knee Replacement

There’s a difference between feeling one’s age and knee pain that keeps one from participating in even the most common of everyday activities. For those suffering from chronic knee pain, joint replacement surgery could help. To learn more, Richard A. Rosa, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon and Co-Medical Director of the Joint Institute at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, will hold an educational seminar on customized ConforMIS iTotal knee replacements on September 29, 2016 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center, 200 South Orange Ave., Livingston, NJ.

Dr. Rosa fellowship trained at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City in adult reconstructive and joint replacement surgery and was chief resident of orthopedic surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. One of the first surgeons in the nation, and the first in New Jersey, to use ConforMIS implants, Dr. Rosa has completed 300 cases of partial and total customized knee implants since he first started using the technology seven years ago.

The ConforMIS technology platform is able to convert a patient’s CT scan into a 3D model of their knee, correcting any underlying deformity. From that model an implant is designed to precisely match that patient’s size and shape. There are a number of benefits to this approach including the potential for less pain after surgery, a more natural feel and faster recovery.

“Since I started using the iTotal®, patients have been doing extremely well in comparison to standards off-the-shelf knees,” said Dr. Rosa. “Patients seem to recover more quickly and have a faster range of motion. I’m seeing them two weeks after surgery walking into the office without any type of assisted device, which was rare in prior patients before switching to the ConforMIS iTotal knee replacements. I attribute these positive outcomes to the fact that the ConforMIS iTotal re-creates the patient’s own anatomy, so I am able to minimize bone resection and balance the patient’s ligaments throughout the entire range of motion.”
