Saint Barnabas Medical Center Earns Top Grade for Safety and Quality

One of 63 in the Nation To Earn Consecutive ‘A’ Rating

For the 11th consecutive time, Saint Barnabas Medical Center has earned a safety grade of “A” from The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit hospital watchdog organization. Hospital safety inaccuracies, such as patient injuries, accidents and infections, result in the death of over 200,000 Americans annually, making safety issues the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. Saint Barnabas Medical Center, a RWJBarnabas Health facility, is one of only 63 hospitals in the nation – and the only in Essex County – to earn a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of “A” since the inception of the program in 2012.

“This recognition showcases Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s commitment to patient safety and quality, said Stephen P. Zieniewicz, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Safety for all is Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s top priority including safety for our patients and their families, our employees, visitors, students, medical residents and all those in training. Being in this select group receiving the highest rating possible from The Leapfrog Group for all 11 reporting periods is a direct reflection of our physician and staff’s focus on providing the safest and highest quality care.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade reflects Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s outcome measures such as infections, falls and preventable complications from surgery, as well as process and structural measures including strong nursing leadership and engagement, use of computerized physician order entry to prevent medication errors, hand hygiene policies, and adherence to medical and medication protocols that prevent complications. Additionally, employees from all areas of the hospital attend daily safety briefings to identify any potential safety concerns and act quickly to implement and enforce solutions.

Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to indicate how well hospitals protect patients from preventable errors, injuries and infections by assigning A, B, C, D and F grades to U.S. hospitals twice a year. The grade is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
