Monmouth Medical Center pediatric endocrinologist Mike Barrows, D.O. received
gold and silver medals at Rescue 2016-International Lifesaving Federation
World Championships, which took place recently in Noordwijk, Netherlands.
Long Branch, NJ – Monmouth Medical Center pediatric endocrinologist Mike Barrows, D.O., a
dedicated United States Lifesaving Association ocean lifeguard since the
age of 18, recently participated in the Rescue 2016-International Lifesaving
Federation World Championships held in Noordwijk, Netherlands.
The Shrewsbury resident, who has competed in lifeguard tournaments for
more than 25 years, won a gold medal in the 400-meter surf race and a
silver medal in the Ironman event (40-44 age group) at the World Championships,
which brought together nearly 4,000 athletes from 40 countries. The ironman
event involves a 1.4 km course that includes a 300 meter swim, 400 meter
board paddle, 600 meter surf ski and beach sprint running.
In addition to competing as an individual at the event, Dr. Barrows also
served as Head Coach and physician for the United States Lifesaving Open
National Team. The team finished in 5th place in the ocean/beach events and 11th place overall out of 38 nations.
As section chief of the Center for Disorders of Insulin and Metabolism,
Dr. Barrows uses his lifeguarding accomplishments to serve as a role model
for young patients, inspiring them to follow his fitness footsteps and
encouraging obese children and their families to adopt healthy lifestyles.
At The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center,
Dr. Barrows and his colleagues specialize in treating diabetes, thyroid
conditions and other endocrinopathies in infants, children and adolescents.
The center’s Pediatric Obesity Program provides a blame-free, supportive
environment to help overweight youngsters lose weight and live healthier
through a multidisciplinary team consisting of three physicians, two certified
nutritionists, three certified diabetes educators, a social worker and
a child psychologist.
