Diane M Diane's Pink Crusader Patient Story

“I was not a person who went to therapy but the support group and the support services available at Saint Barnabas were invaluable to me."

Diane Mueller has always devoted her life to others. A special education teacher who retired just three years ago, Diane was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 at the age of 45. She did not have any family history of breast cancer nor any symptoms. At that time, her children were in elementary school. She underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and reconstruction along with 15 years of longterm medication therapy.

She joined a support group offered by the hospital and to this day, four original members still meet regularly. “I was not a person who went to therapy but the support group and the support services available at Saint Barnabas were invaluable to me,” she says.

In 2014, the breast cancer struck her bones and leg which required additional surgery. Her metastatic cancer made her a candidate for a clinical trial. After doing her research and visiting other well-known cancer centers, she opted to enroll in the clinical trial at The Cancer Center at Saint Barnabas. As her treatments continue, she is tested every other month to monitor the progress of her disease.
