Health Information for Consumers

"Ask a Librarian" Reference Service at Saint Barnabas Medical Center

The Medical Library at Saint Barnabas Medical Center has a strong collection of medical, nursing and allied health clinical information resources for the hospital's staff. In addition to serving the staff, the Medical Library also provides reliable Consumer Health information resources and services for patients, families, and members of the community.

By using the Medical Library's free and confidential "Ask a Librarian" reference service, you can ask for information written in easy-to read, understandable language about different illnesses, conditions, tests and wellness. Our medical librarians are trained to find current and reliable information from high quality websites, books, journals and other resources. You may ask for information by email, phone or by visiting our library. See below for contact information. In addition to the Ask a Librarian reference service, we also have a unique collection of Consumer Health books and consumer health newsletters. The books in the Consumer Health collection may be checked out by patients, families and members of the community.

You may submit an Ask a Librarian question by:

  • Sending an email to sbmcmedlibrary@barnabashealth.org
  • Calling 973-322-5050
  • Stopping by the library to request consumer health information (hours of operation are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, except for holidays)

Medical librarians are not clinical health care providers. Therefore, we cannot and do not:

  • Diagnose or give opinions on illnesses and conditions.
  • Analyze or express an opinion on any type of medical test results.
  • Suggest or recommend any treatment, medication, etc.
  • Suggest or recommend particular physicians.

Instead, as librarians, we are searchers and providers of information. We can find and provide current, high quality information in easily understandable language about health conditions, illnesses, procedures, tests, medications and wellness. For example, we can provide a packet of information for you about diabetes, celiac disease, overactive bladder, arthritis, thyroid disorders, deep vein thrombosis, COPD, epilepsy, different types of cancer, depression and other mental illnesses, asthma, heart disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, influenza, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, Sjogren's syndrome, hepatitis C, lupus, kidney disease, stroke, eating disorders, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson Disease, osteoporosis, migraine, Multiple Sclerosis, coping with aging parents, pregnancy and breastfeeding. We can research rare diseases for you.

We even have cookbooks especially created for certain conditions such as celiac disease, diabetes and cancer, as well as cookbooks for general healthy eating and wellness. We also have a collection of books for both adults and children on end-of-life, grief and resiliency. We can find contact information for local or national support groups for specific illnesses and conditions.
