Do you experience leg discomfort, swelling and varicose veins? If so, you may be suffering from superficial venous reflux disease. Approximately 25 million people in the United States suffer from this condition. Traditionally, patients diagnosed with venous reflex would undergo invasive vein stripping surgery. Now, patients can be treated with minimally invasive vein closure procedures which are a more comfortable alternative.
Procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and patients can usually return to normal activities within 24 hours of treatment.
Treatment methods include foam sclerotherapy, liquid sclerotherapy, VNUS RFA ablation, endovenous laser ablation, ambulatory phlebectomy, and spider vein treatments. Fluoroscopic x-ray equipment is also used for complicated cases, including pelvice congestion syndrome, vulvar varices, varicoceles, and those with complex leg vein anatomy.
Thermal Vein Ablation Procedures
The procedure uses state-of-the-art catheters designed to ablate or close the vein with minimal impact on the surrounding tissue. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Using ultrasound, we will position the catheter into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter powered by radio-frequency (RF) or laser energy delivers heat to the vein wall. As the thermal energy is delivered, the vein wall shrinks and the vein is sealed closed. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins. Following the procedure, a simple bandage is placed over the insertion site, and additional compression may be provided to aid healing. We may encourage you to walk, and to refrain from extended standing and strenuous activities for a period of time. Patients who undergo the procedure typically resume normal activities within a day. Procedural highlights include:
- Relief of symptoms
- Outpatient procedure
- Local anesthesia with or without conscious sedation
- Resume normal activities within 1-2 days
The procedure results in good cosmetic outcome with minimal to no scarring, bruising or swelling.
